Chapter One

“I bet I’m faster than you!”

The small robot-like creature bounced into the air, his armor aglow, sparkling like the stars above him.

“You’ve got short legs!”

Regardless to the hint of being short legged, the small creature darted across an open expanse, only sparse grass sprung up every so often. His blue-lined armor almost seemed to leave a fading trail behind.

“Thirteen-thirteen, you’re bound to get sore feet, darting around like that!”

Blue eyes sparkling in delight, the small creature, a zetraloid, launched himself atop a diminutive rock. Cold wind buffeted him and swept him clear off his feet.

“Bleh!” He exclaimed as he stood again, spitting out dirt.

His older sister stood trying her best to stifle a laugh.

“You clumsy little thing!”

Thirteen-Thirteen smiled shyly as he clambered up the rock once more, this time clinging with his glowing hands to secure himself. The night sky was dark, sprinkled with stars and swirls of blue. Ice cold wind slapped against his blue striped face. Lifting his head to feel the wind all around his small body, he blinked curiously.

“Something’s out there.” He whispered as he lowered into a crouch.

His sister tuned her transmitters to pick up the faintest of sounds but all she could hear was the howl of wind and the swish of dry grass.

“I…I don’t hear anything, Thirteen-thirteen.”

“But it’s there!” He insisted, eyes wide in alarm, “Something…unfriendly.”

“Oh nonsense.” His sister nudged him with her foot, “Nothing’s ever out there.”

“But…I can hear it.” Thirteen-thirteen’s helmet fins drooped.

“Have you been watching scary movies with Thirteen-Twelve again?” She rested her hands on her hips, giving him a disapproving stare, although her violet eyes shown only of concern.

“No…er…w-well yeah, but—“

“Thirteen-thirteen! You know dad told you not to do that.”

“I know but—“

“It’s probably just the movies, silly. Maybe if you had listened you wouldn’t be sitting there with eyes as wide as an owl’s!”

Thirteen-thirteen sighed hopelessly. No one listened to him. Being the youngest was no fun. Displeasure quickly forgotten, he scurried up a thick, wooden, fence post, taking care not to be blown clear off.

The chirp of crickets and the howls of wind had begun to lull him into wondering, quickly replaced by sleepiness. His mouth stretched wide in a yawn. Thirteen-Ten shook her head as she scooped him up.

“Come on, you, it’s passed your bed time anyway.”

“But I’m not…“ He yawned yet again and rubbed his eyes, “…tired yet.”

“Mmhmm.” Her little brother was nearly asleep in her arms.

She usually took care of everyone. Their father was nearly always gone at a place called The Zetraloid Federation. Yawning herself, she tucked her little brother under a jumble of warm blankets. He snuggled down into them without a word.

“Goodnight.” She whispered as she tip-toed out of the room.

Thirteen-thirteen glanced at his shadow in the blue glow his armor cast upon the wall. He was sure something wasn’t quite right out there.

REPEAT REPEAT WE'VE GOT AN EPICALLY SHORT CHAPTER HERE!

Chapter Two

Thunder rumbled and lightning lit up the sky. It was common weather. Although the night had passed by peacefully, Thirteen-thirteen still couldn’t shake the feeling that haunted him

Something wasn’t right. He crawled out of bed, landing clumsily on the ground, then tottered on, daring to creep to the doorway. All was quiet. He pushed the door open with care not to make it creak. Nothing but the mild tick of the clock. He sighed, crawling back into his warm bed. Just as darkness had begun to edge its way back to his mind, a loud slam ripped him out of it.

Several footsteps thumped down the halls and another door crashed loudly. Thirteen-thirteen scrambled out of bed and made a run for his door. The footsteps had faded into another room by now. Peaking out into the hall, he caught sight of something dark blue moving into a room further down.

He slipped out the opposite way. There was no sight of his siblings anywhere. Confused, he headed for the room at the opposite end of the house. No one was there either. Backing away from the room, he scrambled to the kitchen. A loud bang against the door turned his mind away from the idea of staying here. Heading into the hallway once more, he was confronted by several zetraloids, much taller than himself, in blue uniforms. Other than that fact, he couldn’t distinguish anything about them.

Another one?”

Thirteen-thirteen began to back away from them as they crept closer. His family was gone and complete strangers had welcomed themselves in. Skepticism mingled in his mind with curiosity.

The Federation! Uncertainty gone, his eyes lit up with delight. He had seen them on T.V. before. They wouldn’t hurt him. They protected humans and zetraloids alike, but what were they doing here? And why didn’t his family want to meet them? Surely they would want to meet them too.

“Hi.” He announced as he bounded up to them.

The zetraloids surrounding him gazed down at the young Shapeshifter and shrugged before snatching him by his arm and lifting him off the ground.

“Definitely a Shapeshifter.”

The others nodded in agreement.

Thirteen-thirteen winced at their tight grip but didn’t complain.

“Take him away.”

Thirteen-thirteen noticed that a zetraloid in a black uniform with golden trim had said this. The one holding his arm nodded and headed for the door.

“I can’t go!” he tugged back against their grip, but it was no use, “My family will wonder where I’ve gone!”

“They’re gone.” One answered briskly.

“But—I…”

“Hurry up.”

Thirteen-thirteen glanced over his shoulder at the house as they walked into the storm of early morning. Sky still dark, it was hardly visible. His feet slipped on the wet stalks of grass. Fear had replaced the excitement he once had towards these zetraloids. Why had his family left?

“Where are we—“

“Shut up!”

Thirteen-thirteen blinked in surprise before he was lifted off the ground again and shoved into a burlap sack. He grimaced as the zetraloid slung the sack over his shoulder and marched on.

“Affirmative. We have gathered the last of the ‘shifters.”

Chapter Three
Thirteen-thirteen curled himself into a tight corner. Nonstop chatter flooded in fearful waves all around the cramped room. He felt tense and lost amongst them. Other Shapeshifters. Apparently there had been a planet-wide recall. Humans feared they would grow to be too powerful of a race he had heard amongst the gossip.

Occasionally the zetraloids in uniforms would come in, hauling out a clump of zetraloids. His family was here—some of them but they were too distracted to be of any comfort. Long sense they had been shoved into this stuffy room he had decided the Federation was not nearly as nice as the seemed on TV.

A shiver trailed through his body. The worst wasn’t over yet. There was something all the others were dreading—something terrible--and the fact he didn’t know what it was only made it worse.

As the day moved on, settling into night, the room had near emptied. Where ever the others were going, they weren’t coming back. Thirteen-thirteen’s sister settled down beside him, wrapping her arms around him in a hug. He leaned against her and sighed. Even she seemed lost in despair, but her attempt of comfort was better than nothing.

He gazed into her violet eyes and tilted his head to one side.

“I’ll protect you.” She whispered, hugging him again.

Just then the door opened. Only six Shapeshifters remained in the room and they were gathering them all. Thirteen-thirteen fell in step beside his big sister, holding her hand. No one said a word, but he felt fear pulsing from all the others.

Their footsteps resounded against aluminum floor plates. This was a straight tunnel it seemed. It led down a slope and nothing but silver surrounded them on all sides. Thirteen-thirteen frowned as they neared the bottom.

“It’s hot down here.”

His sister only put her hand on his shoulder though. As the doors opened a massive heat wave nearly unbalanced him. Still they were forced inside. Thirteen-thirteen stared in awe. A massive cube-structured machine stood in the center with steam billowing from its top into vents over head. The floor around the machine was aglow in shades of red and orange.

Three of the zetraloids in front of them were being scanned by a small handheld device and then ushered onward. Thirteen-thirteen was the last for it to pass over.

His mouth dropped in alarm as he watched two zetraloids in special suits force the other three inside the cube. He took a few steps back, only to bump into one of the zetraloids who had brought them here. The zetraloid promptly shoved him forward.

His sister turned her gaze towards him as the remainders were herded forward.

“Be brave.” She whispered, “Always be brave.”

Everything else went by in a blur. A long, painful, blur. Heat. Extreme heat. Thirteen-thirteen breathed in only to find scorching heat tearing at his throat. He coughed and stumbled forward in the glowing blaze. His body burned and ached. Blistering burns had begun to dissolve his feet into a melting mass. He cried out as he fell forward, the intense heat engulfing all around him as he writhed futilely against the burn.

Then he saw his sister. Violet eyes fading to a gray as her body melted, life draining from her. A purplish glow emitted from her hand, incasing him—one of the Shapeshifters’ many talents. A type of barrier-like protection.

The pain had seemed to die away for just a moment.

“We’ll always love you.” His sister’s fading voice quivered, “Be brave.”

Her hand fell, quickly eaten by the hungry flames.

“Wait…” Thirteen-thirteen called; his voice distant and weak but he said no more.

Despite all his struggling effort, all went black and pain was finally gone. The last chance he would ever have of seeing his siblings again gone as fast as it had come.

Chapter Four:

Thirteen-thirteen’s eyes fluttered open as a beam of light burned against his face. Gasping, he lept up only to fall once more. He gazed around, eyes stretched wide in horror. Everything was different. White walls surrounded him with only a small window across the room. Machines lined in a circle around where he lay on a black towel.

Strange tubing hung from around his arms and waist while his legs were wrapped in a thick, white, cloth, material. Something covered his face too—his mouth and nose. It hissed to life.

Thirteen-thirteen clawed recklessly at it until he’d pried it off. It hung from his neck, still hissing threats. Instantaneously, he erupted in a fit of coughing and gasping that made his sides ache.

The door across the room flew open and in stepped a human. He reached over and placed the hissing device on Thirteen-thirteen’s face again. Startled, Thirteen-thirteen tumbled back, nearly falling off.

“Don’t take that off. Your system isn’t able to support itself yet.”

Nothing made sense now! Thirteen-thirteen’s head ached with unanswered questions, fear, and sudden realization of pain.

“I want to go home!” He wailed, voice muffled by the machine.

The man pushed him down on his back into the center of the small bed.

“Calm down. Nothing good will come from stressing your system.”

Thirteen-thirteen stomach churned. So many things he didn’t know! Where was he? Where was his family? Who was this man? What had happened? He wanted to hide in his sister’s arms but she was gone.

“I am Canorith.” The man announced, “I mean you no harm. I’m helping you.”

Thirteen-thirteen scarcely heard him.

“You’re a Shapeshifter.” The man continued, “You must have an interesting story.”

Thirteen-thirteen blinked and proceeded to sigh. He was so helplessly lost. Canorith hadn’t seemed phased in the least though. Rather he inspected each machine with intricate care while Thirteen-thirteen fought to remember all that he could.

“Found you in a box.” Canorith commented amidst his work, “Weren’t a pretty sight. You were melted up pretty bad.”

Thirteen-thirteen clutched the towel he was on as memories flooded back.

“Pretty impressive you made it out alive. You sure are one lucky little ‘shifter.”

I don’t feel very lucky. He thought as he tried to get up again, only to fall.

“You have to stay there.” Canorith insisted, “I had to nearly rebuild half of your body—can’t expect to be up and walking already.”

Thirteen-thirteen kept quiet and remained still. No danger appeared to be present right now.

“I design new zetraloid models.” The man added conversationally as he adjusted the settings on one of the machines. “They’ve ordered for all Shapeshifter blueprints to be destroyed, but I think it’s still fresh enough in my mind to get you fixed up.”

Thirteen-thirteen wasn’t so sure about any of that. Glancing at his hands, he noticed the once blue glow emitted from them had turned to a dull gray. The machine which several lines strung from bleeped and whirred. Thirteen-thirteen felt a vibrating pulse shoot out through the wires and yelped in surprise.

“Sorry.” Canorith apologized, “Trying to spark your system to function again.”

“I don’t want my system to function.” Thirteen-thirteen gave Canorith a rather pitiful look of disapproval.

“Nonsense. Of course you do.” He continued with the adjustments, “It’s necessary for you to live.”

Thirteen-thirteen flinched as another pulse trailed through his body, branching out like tentacles, “But it hurts.”

“I can’t change that.”

Thirteen-thirteen buried his head behind his outstretched arms and sighed, dreading the next pulse which came soon enough. A strange sensation made his hands and feet tingle but it faded quickly.

“Alright. I’m going to have to raise the power level up just a bit and see if we can’t get it working that way.”

Eyes wide with fear, Thirteen-thirteen covered his face again. A pulse surged through the wires. Thirteen-thirteen’s legs thrashed against the railing and he rolled over in surprise at the involuntary effect it had on him. He cried out rather pathetically and blinked his big eyes, already brimming with tears.

Canorith stared for awhile, as if surprised.

“You, my friend, are an over reactor.”

Thirteen-thirteen smiled. His body now glowed brightly as he gazed up at the human. All worry had vanished for the time being. His legs burned like an open wound still being irritated and he had large sores on his arms, but it didn’t matter to him at the moment. He finally felt a bit better, energy returning--His mind now functioning better.

Canorith smiled at the little zetraloid.

“I think you’re gonna be okay.”

Faint Deception Vide
PostSubject: Re: Faint Deception    Faint Deception Icon_minitimeTue Sep 07, 2010 10:42 pm

Chapter Five

Thirteen-thirteen pounced on a fly that had carelessly landed on the floor. About a week had passed and now he was restless. He was still in the same room, but that was okay. The fly buzzed away but Thirteen-thirteen had lost interest in it anyway. Spying the window, he took a running leap towards it. He had an agile build, but the window was still high. He caught the seal with his fingertips and slammed against the wall, feet scrabbling to get a foot hold. He twisted his body, trying to swing up onto it but lost his grip and fell to the floor with a thud.

He shook his head and darted back across the room. This wasn't so bad. It was just like being on a vacation! He'd have lots of stuff to tell his family when he was all better. The heavy door clicked open and Canorith stepped in. Today he was wearing black pants and a light green shirt, but he didn't look as happy.

“You're supposed to be resting.” He set his stack of papers on the table.

The unexpected noise made Thirteen-thirteen jump and retreat.

“Why are you out of bed?”

“Bed is boring!” He called as he raced across the room again, “Look what I can do!”

He leapt at the window, clinging to the seal again. Canorith wasn't nearly as amused though. He pulled the Shapeshifter off and walked him back over to the bed he had made.

“You're never going to fully heal if you keep that up.”

Thirteen-thirteen rolled his blue eyes and crawled back into his bed. Stretching each limb in turn, he snuggled down on the soft blanket and watched Canorith set about his work. The man had pulled a chair up to his lab table and spread the stack of papers out across it. Thirteen-thirteen's eyes shimmered with excitement as he leapt from his bed and tackled a stray paper to the floor.

“Hey!”

Thirteen-thirteen backed away, clumsily falling over his own feet as he scampered across the room and slid to a stop. In joyful bounds he headed for the door—someone was opening it. No one had ever come through besides Canorith before. Just as he had reached it, the door swung open and almost crushed him against the wall. Luckily he had squirmed out of the way.

Canorith's daughter, Akura, had stopped in her tracks when she spotted him. Her rich brown hair tumbled over her shoulders in waves as she approached the young zetraloid.

“Aww, you're so cute!”

She dropped to her hands and knees in an instant and wrapped her arms around him. Thirteen-thirteen licked her hair, clearly in hopes of it being chocolate, but found its taste nothing like such things.

“Bleh! Soapy!” He exclaimed, shaking his head back forth as if the flavor were horrendous.

Canorith had stopped trying to do paperwork for a moment with all the interruptions. Now he sat watching the two's first meeting.

Thirteen-thirteen smiled at the girl and rolled over onto his back as he looked at her upside down.

“You're silly!” Akura poked at his belly to which he quickly jumped up and retreated from.

“Don't make him run around, Akura. He needs rest to heal.”

“Ohh....okay dad!” She hurried over to Thirteen-thirteen and crossed her arms, “You're a bad, bad zetraloid, not listening like that!”

Thirteen-thirteen sat down and watched her curiously, head tilted to one side as if to understand what she was saying.

“You better get back in bed so you can get all better! Come on.”

She attempted lifting the metal creature off the floor but he proved to be heavier than she had expected as she settled for dragging him by an arm instead. Once they reached the bed, she shoved the zetraloid, making him trip and fall into it.

“Now you stay in bed, that way we can play later!”

Akura blissfully skipped out of the room, leaving it to him and Canorith.

“You're going to need an identity.” the man announced after he had finished with his work.

“What's an i...den...icky?”

“What people know you by. In your case, appearance. Like this.” the man held out a thick book. It had pictures of other zetraloids on it along with information too complex for him to understand.

“Just think about it. I'm sure you'll find one you like.”

Faint Deception Vide
PostSubject: Re: Faint Deception    Faint Deception Icon_minitimeTue Sep 07, 2010 10:43 pm

Yes FYI he spends a lot of time chasing bugs around.

Chapter Six:

“Gotcha!” Thirteen-thirteen sprang into the air, whisking a plump bumblebee to the ground.

It buzzed and sputtered as it rose up once more. It flew to the window and promptly began bouncing off of it. Thirteen-thirteen stalked behind it, careful to keep his feet silent. It had nowhere to run, or fly. This time he’d catch it for sure. He leaped and managed to get high enough to clear the sill and collide with the window.

The window creaked as a fracture snaked along the center. The bee had floated away. Thirteen-thirteen shook his head and gazed out. To his surprise, it looked even less like his home out there. Where was the grass, tall weeds and howling winds? As far as he could see, a small, box-shaped yard was neatly beside each house. Houses—there were rows of them. All aligned one to the next. Some didn’t even have grass but rather were all arranged in one building—an apartment. Between the side he was on, was a paved road which cars were rumbling along on.

Craning his neck to one side, he pushed himself against the window to get a better look. He couldn’t make out all the details, but it certainly led to a bridge of some sort. Tiny buildings dotted the other side—barely in view. That was strange. He should’ve been somewhere near home, shouldn’t he?

The office door opened and in stepped Canorith, another human following behind him. Thirteen-thirteen slithered down from the window and inched towards them. The other man had short brown hair, brown eyes, and rectangular glasses. He also wore a coat. A white coat with black shoes. He smelled strange to Thirteen-thirteen—like plastic.

The two had their attention on him. Thirteen-thirteen stopped and smiled. He had taken on a new form since the night before. His once white armor was now jet black, reflecting rays of sunlight in white streaks. The soles of his feet were white as were his hands, yet they still glowed dim blue. Finally, his sparkly blue eyes were now a crimson red.

Both humans remained silent. Thirteen-thirteen did likewise.

“Interesting choice.” Canorith finally stated and proceeded to sip his coffee.

“You can’t possibly be serious.” The other man adjusted his glasses, “He’s a Shapeshifter.”

“I told you he was.”

“But he’s a Shapeshifter!” The man rubbed his head with furious strokes. “You’re endangering your investment!”

“Terrik, honestly.” Canorith gave the other a long stare before looking back to Thirteen-thirteen, “No one will find out.”

“Aside from the fact his hands are glowing like a beacon?”

“That’s resolvable.”

The one called Terrik sighed and shook his head as he glanced at the little black armored zetraloid.

“You’re really keeping him?”

“You expect me to just toss him out like he’s nothing? I don’t see the harm in keeping him. He’s no different than the others.”

“Aside from recently being outlawed and being able to shape shift? Of course not.”

“Your sarcasm is hardly appreciated.”

“You’re going to regret this someday, you know.”

Canorith shrugged, “I’ll regret it if I don’t.” He kneeled beside Thirteen-thirteen, “This is Terrik.” He pointed to the one who had come with him, “He helps zetraloids too.”

Terrik nodded, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Thirteen-thirteen tilted his head to one side. That was a complicated way to say hello.

“Hi.” He answered simply.

“Charming.” Terrik raised an eyebrow.

Thirteen-thirteen’s expression grew serious as a frown began to tug at the corners of his mouth. His helmet fins drooped slightly as he glanced to the window.

“What’s wrong?” Canorith asked.

“I’m tired of vacation.” Thirteen-thirteen gazed up at him, concern in his eyes, “I wanna go home.”

“Er, you can’t really do that, kid.”

Canorith shot his coworker a glare that encouraged him to stop at once. He may not have known the whole story behind the new zetraloid, but it was common knowledge that nothing for him would ever go back to whatever his previous perception of normal had been.

“You’ve hardly been here a few weeks.”

“I miss my family.” Thirteen-thirteen gazed down at the floor once more.

“Oh, Canorith, that kid is going to have issues.

Canorith ignored Terrik, “Aw, come on, kid, cheer up a little. Vacations are supposed to be fun.”

Terrik once more, added his own opinion. “If you have any sense left, you’ll get rid of him. He’s going to be a troublemaker.”

“Will you stop being so negative and do something else?”

Although apparently offended by the comment, Terrik agreed, leaving just Canorith and the black armored zetraloid.

Canorith’s advice on how to have a proper vacation had done little to aid his mood. Neither of the two spoke for some time. Thirteen-thirteen walked over to a wooden chair in the room and pulled off the scarf he’d been wrapped in upon arriving here. He proceeded to hug it.

“Vacations are no fun without my brothers and sister.”

“Now, who made that rule up?” Canorith took the scarf from him and set it back on the chair, “Maybe you just need to come out and explore a little.”

“Really??” Thirteen-thirteen’s helmet fins perked back up.

“Of course.” Canorith opened the door for the little zetraloid and watched as he burst out into the room beyond without a care. The dark-green carpet had already caught his attention on his exploration expedition.

For the time being, at least the little zetraloid was content, but Canorith knew it wouldn’t be long before he’d have to face the reality that this was no vacation.

Faint Deception Vide

Dramatic Edge alert =U

Chapter 7

Thirteen-thirteen was sprawled out on a tan couch, only half watching the news on t.v. His helmet fins were flopped carelessly to either side, and his once crimson eyes were now dim and dull. He could hear the chatter of the woman who lived here—Canorith’s wife—as she carried on a phone conversation. Canorith had gone to his business office and their daughter was at school.

Thirteen-thirteen snuggled his face down against one of the plush pillows. Distinct memories haunted his mind. He wasn’t the only one who had been injured. His family had been there too. No matter how badly he wanted to pretend they were safe at home, he couldn’t help but feel they were not.

The flash of flames, searing pain of burns. He clutched the pillow tighter and cringed. Had the same happened to them? Had they felt that pain too? He sprang from the couch upon feeling something touch his arm. Blinking, he realized it had just been Canorith’s wife. She was frowning, although he wasn’t sure why. He gazed back at her for awhile. She sighed and went to find the remote, muttering something about ‘unpredictable’. He didn’t think she liked him very much. That was fine though, he was determined to get out and find his family; then she wouldn’t have to worry about him at all.

Careful to make sure Canorith’s wife wasn’t looking, he slinked over to the door. He was plenty tall enough to reach a normal door handle. Grasping the silver handle in hand, he twisted it down until he heard a quiet click. With one more glance towards the couch, he stepped outside and closed it just as carefully. His chest tingled with pride at his accomplishment. It vanished as soon as he’d turned back around.

His eyes stretched wide. What he’d seen from the window wasn’t even a quarter of what was out here. There was the usual traffic driving down the road, but the houses were every direction he looked, some with young children playing in front. There was also stop signs every ten houses or so. Where did it all end?

Something was wrong with the air. It felt damp and almost misty. It carried a very faint scent of salt, mixed with much stronger scents like the rawness of fresh cut grass and the stench of car smog. The weather at home had never felt like this before.

Every direction had the same house design and street setup as far as he could see with only the difference of a plant or lawn decoration. Well, standing around wasn’t going to help him. He headed left. It was all very strange. A smooth, hard, flat rock lined the entire road. He’d never seen anything like it, and so many homes…

He hoped his family hadn’t forgotten about him. What if they had gone to a new place too? Maybe they were here. He closed his eyes and tried feeling for their familiar presence and was surprised when it caused him to run into a streetlight post. Rubbing his nose, he shook his head. He didn’t like this new place.

Street after street. Everything had been the same—until now. A huge silver bridge stretched out in front of him. With a sigh, he headed along the side where cars weren’t allowed. Glancing at the traffic, it looked as if there were at least eight lanes—four coming towards him and four headed to the faint, jagged outlines just visible in a gray haze in the distance.

He tried blocking all the noise as he rubbed his head. It was hard to focus on anything but the grumbles of cars out here and was giving him a headache. He paused to look over the edge. Below, water slapped against its support beams while to either side, water lazily rolled over the top of itself as far as he could see. He shivered. This was nothing like his home. There wasn’t even any land out here in the center. The bridge simply connected the two land masses together. With a sigh of disappointment, he carried on.

After about twenty minutes of walking, he reached the other side. Buildings taller than he’d ever seen before stretched high into the sky, disappearing into a gray-brown haze. Each dazzled with the lights of seemingly hundreds of windows. Cars darted along roads that had narrowed since the bridge while humans with large machines tore at their flat rocks. They were guarded by orange signs where they worked. It seemed like some kind of human force field, encouraging the cars to reduce their speed upon approaching.

Where would he start looking? They could be anywhere. He continued down the street he was on, avoiding the angered humans storming along and talking on portable cellphones. They didn’t seem very friendly here—wherever here was.

He rounded the corner to the right and started down a narrow passageway between the buildings. The path was dark, damp and shadowed. He frowned as he stumbled over a soggy mound of cardboard boxes. Four small mechanical creatures darted out, each having pointed legs surrounding their silver bodies. Every small appendage was covered in a razor sharp, severed blade edge. Zyderoids. Without warning, they charged him.

Thirteen-thirteen scrambled back and grabbed onto the garbage bin. It took a couple tries, but he managed to get up on it. The zyderoids’ little legs clanked against the bottom as they tried to follow, fortunately they couldn’t pierce the material to use as a foothold.

Thirteen-thirteen sighed, thankful for his practice of climbing on everything back at home. It was short lived.

“Aren’t you a little young to be wanderin’ around here?”

Thirteen-thirteen turned to look at the zetraloid who had appeared. It certainly wasn’t his brother.

“Did’ja get lost?” The zetraloid sneered as he stepped closer, “Lost in the big city?”

“I’m not lost.” Thirteen-thirteen replied boldly, “I’m looking for my family.”

The zetraloid laughed, “Looking for your family! How cute.” He leaned in closer, “They’re as good as dead out here, kid.”

Thirteen-thirteen tried his best to hide the fear gnawing at his limbs. Everything told him to run, but to where?

“Get lost.”

“What?” Get lost? That was an odd command.

Without warning, the zetraloid swung his arm around and knocked Thirteen-thirteen off of the bin. Before he had a chance to run, the zetraloid snatched him up by a leg. Surprised, Thirteen-thirteen kicked the zetraloid’s hand with his other foot.

“Ow!” the zetraloid flung him into the air.

Thirteen -thirteen didn’t have a chance to recover before he crashed back down. He cringed as he slammed down hard on his belly, chin bouncing up off the pavement. It was only a moment though, before he scrambled to his feet and made a dash down the way he had come.

He could hear the zetraloid behind him, but didn’t dare look back. He had always been fast; he could only hope that would benefit him now. Bursting out into the open, he collided with a human’s leg. Boxes and letters exploded into the air like confetti.

The man stood back up in a boiling rage, fist shaking as he tossed a water bottle at Thirteen-thirteen; it promptly bounced off his head. Disorientated by the chaos, he charged blindly through crowds of humans. Screams of both terror and anger resounded from every direction, mixed with the honking of horns. He continued pounding forward, were they chasing him? What had he done? He had to escape!

Quite some time later, he squeezed through a narrow gap between a chain-link fence and a brick wall. An insane spasm of barking erupted at once. Thirteen-thirteen hardly had time to frown as he headed for the next wall and clambered over it. He flopped over the side onto a bed of flowers. Exhausted from his sprint, he wearily pulled himself up again and stumbled forward.

Just beyond this road was a field of short grass. Red and yellow flowers blew gently in the breeze and bright green shrubbery and medium height trees grew about in clusters. At least it looked a bit more like home. Maybe it led there. Then he could find his family and everything would go back to normal.

He glanced both ways before crossing the quiet road. How long had he run? Looking at the sky, he noticed it had an orangish brown tinge. It must have been getting late. He sighed as he plopped down on the grass. Rubbing his chin, he realized his earlier encounter with the zetraloid had split it open. Oh well, it’d be okay. He sprawled out on his back and gazed up at the darkening sky.

He wouldn’t find his family before dark and what about Canorith and his family? He had snuck out when they weren’t watching. Would they be mad? Did they even know he was gone? Would he be able to get back?

He forced himself back up and looked for something familiar. Nothing. His helmet fins twitched. He’d gone from noisy chaos to dead silence.

“I’m lost forever!” He cried as he flopped down on his back, “I’m gonna die alone!”

Dramatic Edge alert. =. xDD Okay.

YAAAAY CHAPTER SEVEN!

Edge is booooooored on that couch. xD News and eavesdropping not his cup of tea? Oh boy he is starting to wonder about his family now. =. That can't end well, hopefully he doesn't ask about it. 'Had they felt that pain too?' Wow. =O That is a sad thought. He is unpredictable. xD Canorith's wife speaks the truth.

Achievement Unlocked - 40G - Got out of the room undetected.

He thought he was living in a very small world did he? Poor Edge...what a time for a wake up call. Something wrong with the air. =. I think describing a part like this would be hard and you did a great job with it. =. HA HA he ran into a pole. =D ...looking for his family. Talk about feeling bad after laughing. >_>

Poor Edge does not approve of his new location I see. I probably wouldn't either though. xD Human force field! xDD Nice. Dang non friendly humans making Edge feel unwelcome. OOOo zyderoids. Very Happy I cannot believe you don't use these very often honestly. xD Though then when they finally are there it makes it coooool. =. Thankful for his practice of climging on everything. xD You sure do young zetra thoughts and stuff well.

Poor Edge. >=. BAD other zetra. Taking advantage if Edge being inexperienced like that. Human has a good aim. xD Bounced the bottle right off Edge's head! Poor Edge got into the dog pen. Not even time to frown wow. xD Over the wall into the flowers. That human shall be pleased. Wow Edge, quite the change. Busy to dead just like that. Now he has nowhere. D= I dunno what it is, but the thought of Edge out in a field of grass with the orangeness of sunset around him, being totally lost and having no noise is sort of..um...magical. >_> xD I think that scene was really well imagined in other words. Yes the last part is kinda drama but what do you expect from a lil Edge who is in distress? xD

Another great chapter Ten. Very Happy Really like how you are able to make the reader experience what the character is experiencing. You also set up some great scenes that others only wish they could imagine first. 0.0 Bravo and thank you for posting! Very Happy

Yes gotta love human forcefields. XDD AKA LARGE FINES FOR HITTING WORKERS =) XD

Thanks for the many compliments on everything.

Human did have good aim. Epic mailman....or ups man or something like it.

Chapter 8

“What’cha crying about?”

Thirteen-thirteen hopped up and spun around defensively to face the owner of this voice. He’d had enough trouble today—enough running. To his relief, it was just another zetraloid no bigger than himself. It had a teal armor along with black. A red arrow ran from the back of his helmet to the front. He had white gloves and pointy red and white transmitters. He also had long red streamers that connected from the back of his armor.

“What are you talking about?” Thirteen-thirteen glared.

“Just now.” The other replied with a shrug, “You said something and didn’t sound too happy.”

Thirteen-thirteen gave him a suspicious shrug, “I’m just lost, that’s all.”

“Lost? That’s no good! Where ya from?”

“I…I don’t know.” Thirteen-thirteen sighed, he didn’t know either of the places he’d come from.

“Darn.”

“Yeah.”

Neither said anything for a few moments.

“Well, wanna play?”

“What?” Thirteen-thirteen looked as if he couldn’t believe the other was serious.

“I asked if ya wanted to play! There’s a pond around here, we could go down there and—”

“I have to get back, sorry.”

The other zetraloid frowned, but it was only for a moment.

“Alright! We can find your home then!”

Thirteen-thirteen looked back at him quizzically, “But even I don’t know where it is.”

“Well…what was around it??” the other zetraloid bounded over beside him, “I bet we can find it that way.”

Thirteen-thirteen shrugged. All he remembered were massive buildings, people and smaller buildings. Oh, and the water of course. That was it!

“There was a really big bridge.”

“With water underneath it?”

“Yeah!”

“So you live on the other side of the city. I know where that is.”

Thirteen-thirteen smiled. Maybe he wouldn’t be lost forever! “Would you uh, tell me?”

“Nah, you’ll never get it.”

Thirteen-thirteen’s hope sank, “But—”

“I’ll show ya, come on!”

Thirteen-thirteen charged off after the zetraloid, renewed energy surging through his body. One leg was a bit sore but other than that he felt okay. He hesitated when the other headed straight back into that crowded city though.

“Do we have to go this way?”

“It’s the fastest way.” The other replied, “If ya wanna get back tonight.”

“Alright…”

He followed after him yet again, casting wary glances as they passed by any human. One was bound to act up like they all had earlier. It was just a matter of time.

“Oof!” Thirteen-thirteen blinked in surprise at the sudden impact.

A moment or so later he realized he’d run into his guide who had stopped in front of him. The zetraloid showed no response other than smiling.

“Eh, sorry.”

“It’s okay!” He started running along again. “How come you look around like that that?”

Thirteen-thirteen’s eyes widened in surprise, “They’re mean.”

“They’re humans.” He laughed, “How mean can they be?”

Thirteen-thirteen didn’t reply, rather inspecting the humans with a long, drawn out gaze. Odd creatures. His guide obviously hadn’t encountered many of these aggressive creatures before.

“Soo…what’s your name?” the zetraloid asked as he hopped over a divide in the sidewalk quite needlessly.

“Everyone calls me Thirteen-thirteen.” They stopped at a crosswalk, waiting for the little red hand to change, “Who’re you?”

The hand changed and they headed across with the oddly happy zetraloid in the lead, “My name’s Torrent of Rushing Waters.”

“Whaa…”

He stopped to look at Thirteen-thirteen, “But you can call me Torrent!”

“Oh.” He smiled slightly, nodding his head, “That’s much easier.”

Torrent continued leading the way with Thirteen-thirteen trailing behind. He could feel the heat radiating off of the cars as they crossed another crosswalk not too far ahead. The city itself was cooling down, but certainly not the machines the humans drove. He frowned as memories of his family came sliding back. He just needed to get back. He’d figure out what to do then. Regroup, set up a new plan.

“Helloooo.”

Thirteen-thirteen snapped out of his own little world, “What?”

“You’re weird.” Torrent started walking again, “Just thought you should know.”

“Is that bad?”

He shrugged, “Heck if I know!”

Before long Torrent had climbed on top of a brick wall that trailed the main road. His long red scarf like streamers waved gently in the wind.

“So how long ya been here?”

“A few weeks.” Thirteen-thirteen continued on his way, wearily gazing at the ground. Finding his family seemed like a distant dream.

Soon enough they’d reached the familiar sight of the massive bridge. It was just like it had been before with the cars and all the water.

“This is it! This is the bridge!”

Torrent tilted his head to one side, “Well…yeah. I told you I knew where it was.”

Thirteen-thirteen didn’t wait to hear any more. He set off down the path as fast as he could run. Once again the cars drown out all other noise. He dashed to the side, avoiding a soda can that had been hurled out a car window. His new zetraloid friend followed at a constant, carefree pace behind him.

Once they reached the other side, Thirteen-thirteen stopped. Several streets stretched out every direction. Each was filled with those identical houses. Which way had he come down? They all looked the same and…maybe it was left…but which street? Panic began to settle at the back of his mind. He hadn’t the slightest clue as to which of these houses was Canorith’s.

“What’s wrong now?”

Thirteen-thirteen jumped as his new friend spoke up beside him. Had it really been that obvious?

“I don’t know what way I came from.”

“Hmm…” the other looked it all over, pacing back and forth a bit. “Well then, we can just ask around until we find ‘um!”

“What if they’re mean?”

Torrent didn’t wait for an answer as he had already bounded off down a random street. Reluctantly, Thirteen-thirteen followed, glancing around anxiously as if expecting an ambush. It would have been a pretty little community had he not been lost and worried about his family. It had trees with bright green leaves and white flowers that fluttered down in the wind. Birds singing in the trees… he gasped and retreated several steps—he’d nearly run right into that zetraloid! He hurried to withdraw into the cover of a bush, noting, oddly enough, that the zetraloid hadn’t glanced up from the small laptop he held.

It was a mostly black armored zetraloid with red tipped helmet fins and funny black stripes on his face. He wore a black vest and several wires dangled from over his shoulders. His leg armor was primarily black as well, with a red and white diamond shaped armor plate in the knee joint of each leg. Finally, his feet were white tipped with white trim.

“Jumping in bushes doesn’t put the best of light on zetraloids you know.” He commented, still not looking up.

Thirteen-thirteen frowned, so he had seen him. With some hesitance, he crawled back out, twigs scraping against his jet black helmet. He glanced over at him once again, without a word.

“You’re kind of freaky.” The zetraloid commented, still not glancing up.

“Hey…”

“No offense.” The zetraloid finally looked up, blinking his midnight blue eyes, “It was just an observation.”

Thirteen-thirteen tilted his head to one side. How…odd.

“So what’s a zetraloid like yourself doing wandering residential district E?”

“What?”

The zetraloid looked up again, with a look that very much told Thirteen-thirteen he thought he was stupid, “Why are you jumping in peoples’ bushes out here.”

“Oh…I’m…trying to get home.”

“Ah, with that hyper one who ran by here I presume. Interesting.”

“Er…yeah…I guess.” Thirteen-thirteen tried to look at the computer screen but was surprised when the zetraloid shut it abruptly.

“Classified information under code 701, you are not authorized to view these documents without proper permissions, hereby granted of the state. Failure to comply with such orders may to lead to warrant of arrest.”

Thirteen-thirteen’s eyes widened, “I uh…uh…” He took a few steps back.

The other zetraloid smiled, “Hey, don’t worry. It’s just a formality.”

“A…what?”

“Nevermind.” He answered, opening it once more and typing away. “My name’s Punisher. I’m with him.” He pointed to another zetraloid who was switching wires for internet at a telephone box. “We’re from the ATC.”

“What’s tha— ”

“You don’t know what ATC is?!”

Thirteen-thirteen stumbled back in surprise. Punisher simply looked at him, not having a chance to reply before Torrent had returned.

“Hey! What’re you doing?”

Punisher blinked, pulling his closed laptop close, “Nothing…I just— ”

“He’s new here.” Torrent insisted, before helping Thirteen-thirteen up again, “Ya don’t have to be a meanie.”

“I wasn’t being mean. I was just—”

The older zetraloid had come over now. “What’s the problem?”

Punisher looked up with a timid smile, “Nothing.”

“Did you sift through those IPs yet?”

“N..not entirely, not yet.”

The other zetraloid sighed, “Then stop playing around and get to work! You have a crew depending on you. Take it a little more serious.”

“Sorry.” He sighed, “I’ll get to it.”

The other simply nodded and went back to work. Punisher gave Torrent and Thirteen-thirteen a half hearted glare before opening his laptop again.

“Hey, do you know where his house is?” Torrent pointed his thumb towards Thirteen-thirteen, oblivious to Punisher’s mood.

“I don’t even know him.” Punisher muttered, “Why would I know his house?”

“I’m staying with Canorith.”

Punisher glanced up, “…and you don’t know where your house is? Honestly, take a moment to learn where you live!”

“Punisher!”

“Sorry!” He called back to the other before looking to Thirteen-thirteen and Torrent again, “Look, I’m busy.”

“But I’m lost…”

Punisher stared at him for a few moments. “Fine, fine, just…shut up for a minute.” He started typing on his computer, shaking his head on occasion as he used two fingers to scroll down with the touchpad.

“Aha!” He exclaimed at last, “He’s on East 5th street. Follow it down to the end. 95317.”

“How’d you do that?” Thirteen-thirteen asked, simply amazed by his findings without having moved.

“Simple.” Punisher was about to go into an explanation before noticing the suspicious glare from the older zetraloid he was getting, “But I’ll have to tell you later. Stop by ATC sometime and ask for me!”

“Okay!” The two exclaimed before setting off to find Thirteen-thirteen’s temporary home.

Now he was on the right track! Soon he’d be able to plan what to do next. Little did he know what he’d soon find out would change everything about those plans.

Faint Deception Vide
PostSubject: Re: Faint Deception    Faint Deception Icon_minitimeTue Oct 12, 2010 3:05 am

YAY FD! =D And I get to read two chapters in two days! =D I am the luckiest person evar.

Chapter 8. OOOOOoooooo. =. Not that the number of the chapter has anything to do with what is in it....so I shall stop commenting on chapter 8 and scroll down the page to read. =D

Mysterious zetra. =O Could it be? A Torrent zetra? =D I haven't read about Torrent in a long time! Very Happy

“Lost? That’s no good! Where ya from?” <---- xDD Ah Torrent, you are amusing already...and helpful. =. 1313 should be pleased.

"Darn." "Yeah." "Wanna play?" HA HA HA. xDD So random. Torrent is easily distracted. xD Such an epic conversation between youngin's. Surprisingly, Edge seems more mature than Torrent. Yes I wanted to poke fun at Edge. xD Come on Edge don't be a rudeface, go play in a pond with a stranger while you're lost and getting in trouble. =U

Yay Torrent wants to help now. =O Reminds me of Parts kinda. xD Edge has no idea what it looks like and neither does Torrent. Torrent sure seems to know his way around, this is good....FOR EDGE. >=( DUN DUN.

Ahem. Edge does not need much convincing to take the city route. xD Torrent is being nice to Edge. =P I've forgotten that he's actually a kind zetra. o.0 All this RPing makes me think they're all MEAN. Like the humans Edge is seeing. Torrent's name confuses Edge. xD

Nice city and human descriptions BTW. Very Happy Writing about the living society around the main characters is not an easy thing to do. =. Stupid heat, reminding lil Edge of the horrors of his childhood.....which he was still living so the earlier events of his horrible childhood.

“Helloooo.” Thirteen-thirteen snapped out of his own little world, “What?” “You’re weird.” Torrent started walking again, “Just thought you should know.” “Is that bad?” He shrugged, “Heck if I know!” <----- HA HA HA. That is totally genius Ten. Very Happy Love the conversation. xD I see Torrent is extremely offended that Edge doubted his ability to find the bridge. xD

Bad soda can. 0.0 Nice dodge Edge. Torrent followed carefree. xD Yes I can see that. HAW HAW Edge you cannot hide your feelings. Torrent has instinct. Wink Poor Edge though, being lost in the big city. D= Edge should be glad Torrent is going to ask around. He can sit there a be shy and inexperienced for the real world then while Torrent is making friends, finding out info, helping others and gaining valuable experience.

Edge hid from harmless zetra. =O Nice job describing the community too BTW. Wink Sounds peaceful. =D Ohhhh zetra saw him. =. Is it Punisher? Perhaps I shall find out. Zetra has skill. xD Not even looking up. Edge is utterly OFFENDED. 0.0 Oh but other zetra said no offense so all is automatically well for the young one. =)

So what’s a zetraloid like yourself doing wandering residential district E?” “What?” The zetraloid looked up again, with a look that very much told Thirteen-thirteen he thought he was stupid, “Why are you jumping in peoples’ bushes out here.” <--- xDD Things must be simpified for Edge. At least that zetra knows his way around it seems...ask Edge....I dare you. =O

This zetra confuses Edge much. xDD And scares him. DUN LOOK AT SCREEN THERE IS BAD STUFF THERE. 0.0 *Edge leaves* *screen is opened to find Wrath being NICE* Terrifying. >_> Yay it is Punisher as I suspected....and I think you told me it was him in IM a while ago. >_> xD YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ATC IS?! xDDD Poor Edge. GASP. Torrent has returned yay.

Punisher is more amusing than I remember. =O Glare at them that's right. =D Punisher does not know where Edge lives? Madness he should know where everyone lives. >=U Technology amazes Edge I see. xD I'd be amazed too if I were not typing on a computer right now. Punisher can not explain how he gets his knowledge. =D The friendship begins..... Poor Edge. Everything is going to change.

Thanks for making me both dread the next chapter, because I feel bad for Edge, and anticipate it greatly because the story is so dang cool. Do you know how hard it is to do both of those things? >_< You know what it means though...it means you are doing an excellent job writing because you can get the reader totally engaged! 0.0 You did a great job and I really enjoyed all the conversations. =P Very lifelike and original at the same time. I enjoyed the long chapter and thank you for taking the time to get it up here so I could enjoy it. xD You are doing a GREAT job with your stories and unlike many things they do not bore me. =D

Human descriptions FTW XDDD I agree, it is tough though. HAHA yes. Brad is amused yay =D
Bad soda can XDD bad litering people. Little Edge fails at being discreet =U HAHA you are mean to poor Edge XDD You do not know he is HARMLESS. He could be VIOLENT. Peaceful indeed =D Yeeees Edge did not understand. XDD that would be pretty horrifying =\ XD
Younger Punisher is a bit over enthusiastic himself there with his exclamations too eh? XD

And yes he is, because he’s YOUNGER Punisher. He changes later on =) which you’l sorta see in this story actually. Lol =) I make brad dread yaaaay =D

8ten strives for boring chapter* Edge walked. Torrent walked. Edge saw a bird. So did Torrent. Edge sat down. Torrent stood still. =)

BTW moar will be expanded on stuff talked about in here later on for anyone who cares to know that =U

Chapter Nine

Torrent and Thirteen-thirteen arrived at Canorith’s house within a half hour. He waved goodbye to his new friend as he watched him set off back down the street. That done, he decided it best to knock on the door as opposed to barging in. He heard footsteps. Soon the door opened and he saw the familiar face of Canorith. Punisher had been right!

He smiled, but wasn’t greeted by the same response. Canorith didn’t look nearly as happy to see him as he’d expected. Once the man stepped out of the way, he scurried inside, noticing Terrik was there as well.

“Where have you been?”

Thirteen-thirteen flinched at his tone of voice. He thought they’d be happy he was back. Surely they understood that he missed his family?

“I…was…just looking for my family.”

“I told you that would be an issue.” Terrik called from where he sat at a table as he set down his coffee cup.

Canorith rubbed his head as he sighed.

“What’s an issue?” Thirteen-thirteen frowned.

Terrik looked to Canorith who merely put his hands in the air in a motion of giving up and walked into the other room. If he wouldn’t tell the zetraloid, Terrik would have to himself. It had to be done sooner or later and it was already past what he thought best.

“You’re not going home.” Terrik took another sip from the mug as he waited for Thirteen-thirteen to think about it. “You’re a Shapeshifter. They’ve killed all the Shapeshifters. That includes your family.”

Thirteen-thirteen’s eyes went wide as he shook his head; this human must have been insane! His family weren’t bad people, they’d have had no reason to do anything to them. “N-no, my family was good. We didn’t do anything!”

Terrik waited for Thirteen-thirteen to stop his pointless ramble, yes he had been blunt, but it was better than side stepping as far as he was concerned, “A shame, isn’t it? How that works. Good or not, they’re gone. And you will have to learn to live with that. Better sooner than later.”

Thirteen-thirteen’s helmet fins drooped as he fought to make sense out of it. His family…dead? They couldn’t be! He’d been with them! Back in…tears began to streak his face. That fire thing…the Federation…He wiped his arm across his face. No family…

“They didn’t do anything!” He glared at Terrik.

It really had no effect. The man only shrugged.

“Life isn’t fair. It takes from the good and bad alike.”

That said, he pushed his chair back, picked up his coffee mug and left to find Canorith.

Thirteen-thirteen watched him go and then looked around. This once friendly room and house suddenly seemed foreign and lonely. What was he going to do? He sat down by the couch. A stack of magazines rolled off and flopped over his head. He shook them off and looked up at the clock. He could hear the others speaking in the kitchen, but not what they were saying.

What did it matter? Their life was fine. They still had family. He wiped his arm across his face again as he stood up and walked over to the window. What did this all mean? Why did it happen? The Federation was supposed to be good. They were supposed to protect good people and zetraloids. Why wasn’t his family good enough? He nestled his face behind his arms on the window sill. It wasn’t fair! It wasn’t supposed to be like this! He was supposed to be with his family, life was supposed to go back to normal!

He pushed off of the window sill, turning and hurrying back to Canorith’s work room. He looked around, plans covered the tables currently, the garbage can had been knocked over, and several scrunched up papers laid strewn about. No that wasn’t it. He shoved a container of blueprints over. Where was it?

He spotted a box trapped under several blueprints, assorted tools and large books; he could just make out the tail of the red scarf that had been in it. He stood on the tips of his feet as he reached towards it. His finger tips just brushed it. Frustration ebbed at his attempts to grab it and soon enough he’d pulled the entire assortment of things down, knocking himself on the floor.

His eyes narrowed as his mouth curved to a frown. Why was everything out to hurt him today? After a moment, he realized Canorith’s daughter, Akura, was standing above him, staring down with a small frown and clasped hands.

“Are…you okay?” She pushed a set of blueprints off before offering her hand, “Here, let me help you.” She pulled him out from beneath the mess before offering him the scarf. “Were you trying to…get this?”

Thirteen-thirteen looked at it, then her, his eyes shifted from a glare to something…different. Something thoughtful. “Yeah…” He swallowed hard as he stood up, “Yeah I was.”

Yaaay chapter 9. =D When we last saw Edge and Torrent they were harrassing a hacker who was not doing his work....

Bye bye Torrent thanks for the help! Lets not trade phone numbers, e-mails or anyplace you might live okay buddy? See ya! Poor Edge, I knew Canorith wouldn't be happy. Go way Terrik you are not needed in this situation Mr. Grouch. >=. He's looking for his family duh can you blame the poor kid? Gosh.

Poor Edge. =( A child such as he would have much trouble understanding. I guess Terrik does have the right idea that lying to him forever is not good. Geez Terrik way to show some compassion or sympathy for the young one who lost his family! >=( Idiot. Poor Edge geez. >_< Come on Terrik. >=. Be nice why don'tcha.

=\ Poor lil guy. His thoughts and everything are done really well here Kierstin. =. I can understand them and it does coincide with things I think about when I think about what will happen when my family dies. >_> They are not comforting thoughts and I think you did great with them. Especially the part about how life was supposed to go back to normal. I think that would be the hardest part for him. X_X

Good thing Akura is there to help. =P She comforted him somewhat and was able to get him Scarfey at least. =. I am glad or else I'd be super sad that nothing good happened to Edge in this chapter. xDD It was quite powerful though. =O Even though I knew it all along seeing poor innocent Edgy take the news was tough. 0.0 Thank you for getting it up here on the site! I really enjoyed it and you did a fantastic job with it. =P

Chapter Ten

Morning rolled in early as far as Thirteen-thirteen was concerned. He’d barely gotten any sleep thanks to his restless mind over his family. Now he felt more tired than when he’d first drifted off to sleep. He sighed and rubbed his arm as he watched Akura skip by with a small, pink and black backpack. She’d scribbled pictures of zetraloids all over the thing.

She skipped back the other way. Thirteen-thirteen let his gaze follow after her until she had disappeared into her room. Moments later she went by yet again, plopping her lunch down beside the backpack.

“You look sad.”

Thirteen-thirteen glanced up, now she was in front of him. He didn’t answer, but rather ducked his head down and tugged at a strand of carpet. How could he expect her to understand? She had her family. He didn’t though; the Federation had taken them away for no reason. Akura looked at him for awhile longer.

“Come on, I know what you need.”

She started off towards the kitchen but stopped when Thirteen-thirteen didn’t follow. She huffed and came back over to try and encourage him once more. He didn’t budge. She glanced at the barely visible clock before picking up the scarf Thirteen-thirteen had been holding and turning to leave.

“Wait!” Thirteen-thirteen cried. Where was she going with it?

“Come on!” She called, refusing to release it until she had led the black armored zetraloid into the kitchen.

Thirteen-thirteen burrowed his face into it as soon as he had it again. He held it close and tight, closing his eyes as he tried forgetting about life. It wasn’t working; however a sharp bang broke the pattern. Akura had tossed a plate carelessly on the wood table and was fishing around for some tupperwear.

The kitchen was small. The countertop scarcely had enough room for the dish drainer beside the sink. A few pans hung on small nails on the wall; most of the other supplies were hidden in cupboards.

He watched as Akura opened up one and pulled out a small box with colorful rectangles on the front. She tore into it, leaving pieces to litter the room as she pulled out a silvery wrapping. She opened this as well and then tossed two rectangles on the plate.

They looked like the ones on the box—speckled with little rainbow flakes.

“They’re good.” She announced, picking up one from the plate and taking a big bite, “Try it!”

Thirteen-thirteen only stared.

“Come on, don’t be shy!” She shoved it in his hand before tossing the box on the counter, “I gotta go. Bus will be by soon.”

Without giving him time to reply, she grabbed his other hand.

“Come on, you can wait with me.”

Thirteen-thirteen didn’t object and rather let her direct his path to her destination. She picked up her backpack along the way then hurried outside. The morning air was crisp and chilly. It almost reminded him of home…or his old home anyway. This…would be his new home, he guessed, although he didn’t think he’d really like it here.

The two waited on a bench by the road. Akura explained all about what she did at school and all the fun they could have when she returned as she waited for the bus. Thirteen-thirteen simply nodded his head. He was listening to most of it anyway. As time went on, he began nibbling on the rectangle. It had a gooey, red filling inside that was rather tasty. He kicked his feet contently, following the action Akura was while snacking on the rectangle.

“I bet you’ll be the smartest zetraloid ever!”

Thirteen-thirteen thought it sounded like an exaggeration however it didn’t bother him at all. He’d finished his treat entirely. Just as he’d done so, a loud rumble sounded from down the street and a massive, tube-shaped, yellow-orange vehicle loomed down the street, stopping beside the bench with a hiss. He watched curiously as two doors parted.

“Time for me to go.” Akura got up and slung her backpack over one arm, “I’ll see you after school!”

Thirteen-thirteen watched as she climbed into the large vehicle and disappeared. Is that what the humans did every day? He followed after the bus until it reached the end of the street and turned. A leaf fluttered down from one of the trees, tottering atop his head. He glanced up to see several others follow after.

The bus was no longer on his street. What was he supposed to do now? He didn’t have anyone to play with after all. He batted at a couple of leaves before retreating back towards their house. Across the street from them, the neighbors had a zetraloid of some sort, but he didn’t see it anywhere. With a sigh, he pushed open their door and went back inside.

While he had been gone, Canorith had moved to his home office and his wife was watching something about plants on tv. Thirteen-thirteen headed to the kitchen with intentions of finding those rectangles. His efforts were cut short by a loud gurgle. He jumped, nearly doing a flip, if only the chair hadn’t got in his way.

“Jumpy, aren’t ya?”

To his surprise, Canorith had appeared with a small cup. He walked to the counter and lifted a glass container filled with brown liquid stuff. They drank muddy water? Huh.

“Calm down some.” He took a sip, “Nothin’s gonna hurt you, kid.” He sighed, “Ah, I gotta think of a name for you one of these days.” His watch began beeping and he hurried to stop it, “Remind me later, deal?”

Thirteen-thirteen didn’t answer.

“Okay deal.” Canorith answered for him as he headed back to his office room.

Thirteen-thirteen tilted his head to one side. He sure was in a hurry. The odd machine gurgled again, drawing his attention back to it. A mud cooker? He placed his arms on the counter firmly then kicked his feet against the wooden side of it as he tried to get up. He reached for anything to use as leverage and grabbed hold of the mud warmer. It wasn’t as stable as he had thought it’d be. It slammed on its side, pouring out all over.

Thirteen-thirteen gasped and lept back as the hot substance flowed down. It didn’t smell like mud and worse yet, that thing was alive! He withdrew out of the kitchen and headed straight for the office. In alarm, he found it was closed. He tried Canorith’s wife next, but she only pushed him away and told him to stop being a nuisance.

He frowned and approached the kitchen again. The mud monster hadn’t moved. He took a few cautious steps. Maybe the monster had died. The liquid mud was all over the floor now and he watched as it spread out even further. Hmm, what if Canorith wanted more?

He had to make some! He couldn’t have them hate him and besides he knew how to make mud. He hurried outside without delay and stopped on the cement walkway. Scanning the area he realized there was no bare dirt, rather only short, thick, fresh, green grass. It looked like his only option was the grass so he sat down and began tearing at it. Handful by handful he began getting enough dirt. Once he had a good amount, he scurried back inside.

Some of it dropped right at the door, but the majority made it to the kitchen where he set it on the counter. He glanced to make sure the holder hadn’t gotten up. It was still there.

After pushing the dirt back further on the counter, he backed up and took a running leap at it. He made it! Contently, he pulled a cup out of the sink, filled it with water and dumped it in the mud holder. He took another and did likewise. Next was the dirt. Once it was all together, he shook it and hit the button that he’d seen Canorith hit. There. Now Canorith would have his mud! He hadn’t noticed the mess he’d made in the process…not until Canorith’s wife came in and gasped.

Chapter TEN. =D xD Poor restless Edge. =U I understand why and it's pretty justified. I do anticipate seeing just how this will affect his overall attitude. xD Akura, whom I just called Akira, has a tricked out backpack. =P Poor Edge. D= He has been banished to a life of watching a human.

Wow Akura, how very alert you must be to notice such an emotion being emitted from that lil zetra. I kid. >_> It was nice of you to talk to him. =U Akura has ways of making Edge comply. >=D xDD Kidnap his scarfy. Wow the part where he buried his head in the scarf to try and forget life which was interrupted by the bang was very well done. xD I easily imagined it AND it's something that really happens in real life. =O I mean...nicely done. I've never read anyone capturing a moment like that before. =P

POP TARTS?! =. Are these the wonderful things that shall make Edge happy? I mean 1313. xDD EAT THIS EDGE. =D Dun be shy now. >=. *shove into his hand* HEY COME WAIT WITH ME. =D Poor Edge I'd be confused. xD Even the air reminds him of family. D= How long with they haunt you Edge? Forever obviously but...how long before you can live again? =(

Poor shy quiet Edge. xD Very convincing behaviors. =. Smartest zetra ever. =. Gosh your writing is so dang convincing. Everything is so authentic. 0.0 I know I've said that before but what am I supposed to say when I see such great examples of the word all over here? I mean seriously. =.

Poor Edge. Wonder and no doubt minor panic watching his human go away. X_X Edge wants to play. >=. Now he wants food. Dumb neighbor zetra better come out and play. =U

Mega10: Brad neighbor zetra is Corruption. =U

Sorry Corruption you're not dumb. 0.0 Rectangle time. =D xD Edgy Edge. =. Muddy water. EW. xD Edge does not find much wrong with this it would seem. Only that it is odd. Poor Edge has no name.....and Canorith makes deals with himself. xDD I can see that. Mud warmer. =. xDD Uh oh spill time. 0.0 EDGE NOOOO. Run and blame Canorith's wife. 0.0 It was alive. xDD

Poor Edge. In a time of crisis who is there to help? =D The carpet. =U And Canorith's expensive wooden tile. Oh no he's going to make mud!!!! HA HA HA. xDD Oh boy. Poor Edge. So innocent and with good intentions. xD Looking at the cooker to make sure it hadn't moved. xD Canorith can have his mud. Well I bet this will not end well. >_> Canorith will get mad and Edge will never want to be helpful again. xD Excellent writing. Very Happy Good to see how my lil friend Edge is doing again. =P Very convincing writing as always and the characters are still brilliantly crafted. Very Happy Thank you for posting!

Chapter Eleven

Canorith was there moments later doing his best to calm his wife down. Thirteen-thirteen frowned. Hadn’t they wanted more mud? He hadn’t meant to upset her.

“You deal with this!” She demanded at last, her arms waving about in multiple gestures. “This was your idea! Like our house didn’t have enough dirt and problems as it was!”

“I know.”

“Then you bring him.

“I’ll fix it, don’t worry.”

“You better!” She stormed back into their bedroom down the hall and slammed the door.

Canorith turned to Thirteen-thirteen once his wife was gone. His arms were crossed, and his expression was far too serious to be any form of approval. Thirteen-thirteen took a moment to look around…wow. Dirt and water splotched the counter. There were a multitude of footprints surrounding the big spill of previous mud, and from what he could tell, a trail of dirt led from the front door. He hesitantly gazed up at Canorith.

“Get down. Now.”

Thirteen-thirteen did as instructed, splashing into the mess on the floor. Canorith grumbled something inaudible before grasping him by one arm and guiding him outside in a forceful and rushed manner. The man stopped almost instantly, releasing the zetraloid from his grasp and then walking by without a word. He went straight to the lawn and knelt beside it, arm resting on one knee; he reached out with the other and let his hand graze across the area where patches of grass were missing entirely. His gaze traveled to Thirteen-thirteen.

“What did you do?”

Thirteen-thirteen didn’t answer. He had certainly discovered that Canorith did not approve. Maybe making mud was something only he was allowed to do. Thirteen-thirteen wasn’t sure. If that was a rule, why hadn’t he told him so?

The man shook his head and retrieved a long, slender, green, hose and turned the water on. Much to Thirteen-thirteen’s surprise, a cold wave of water crashed down over his head. He yelped in surprise before trying to retreat. The hose had longer range than he had expected though, and in his panic, he didn’t realize he was running in circles.

After a while longer, Canorith shut it off without a word and began rolling it into a neat pile. Thirteen-thirteen frowned and shook his head and then each foot in turn. That hadn’t been very kind of him.

“No more playing in the dirt.”

Maybe that had been the human’s goal—to get the dirt off of him. Well it certainly hadn’t been very nice method, Thirteen-thirteen decided.

“Now for the house.”

He waited outside as Canorith disappeared into the house. Well, so much for being helpful. Could he have ruined it anymore? He began to idly kick a small rock along the sidewalk, gasping when a large shadow blocked out the light all together. He slowly lifted his head to meet the threat looming overhead.

A tall zetraloid was staring down at him. He had two, small, yellow fins that jutted out of the top portion of his otherwise black and white helmet like horns. He had a black chest plate lined by a yellow trim with several jagged shoulder guards extending far over his gray arms. Patches of similar gray armor covered his legs with jet black armor finishing off the lower section. Thirteen-thirteen’s eyes went wide as he retreated several steps.

The massive zetraloid stepped forward. Thirteen-thirteen grabbed the small rock he had been kicking, clutching it fiercely as he felt his back bump against the closed door.

“Hi! You must be the n—ow.” The rock bounced off the larger zetraloid’s forehead, “…new guy.” He rubbed where the rock had hit and smiled, “Gee, you sure are edgy.”

Why did everyone insist upon telling him that? Maybe if they quit sneaking up on him he’d be friendlier.

“Name’s Vorth, you got a name?”

Thirteen-thirteen stood resolute and watched the monstrous zetraloid’s every move until he heard the door click open. That was his chance to run! He took it, dashing inside and evading Canorith who tried preventing it. Now he was chasing too! What had he done? He needed to hide! He rushed to Canorith’s office and scrambled over a mound of blueprints and flung droplets of water in the process. His head swung back and forth. Where could he hide?

No time. Before he could make another move, something had pulled him off his feet entirely.

“Help! Help!!”

He scrambled frantically, kicking at whatever had grabbed him.

“Kid….kid!”

Thirteen-thirteen stopped mid wail of his most recent cry for help and saw Canorith a few feet away. His gaze traveled to what was holding—it was the guy from outside, Vorth.

“Ahh!! Heeellllp!”

He finally squirmed free and darted back outside, charging down the street. He had to get away! He had to find his family! He stopped and frowned. Wait, they were gone! What would he do? Where would he go? He heard voices from behind. They were chasing him! He started running again.

At least he was fast. Thirteen-thirteen could hear the other’s pounding footsteps and shifting armor above his own heavy breathing—Vorth was much slower than he was. He swerved to avoid a crowd of humans. They squealed anyway.

He wasn’t sure if Vorth and Canorith were still following or not now. Too much noise was radiating from every direction. He slid to a stop to avoid rolling into the middle of a street and quickly turned right. Buildings, humans, and trees were all going by in a blur.

He dared to stop when he reached a large mall parking lot. Where was he now? A car was headed his way. It honked, narrowly avoiding him. He retreated to the sidewalk. Here, several businesses lined the way. Numerous chairs and small, black tables were outside, and from one place he smelled a scent similar to that of Canorith’s mud. Maybe if he brought home some new mud he’d be forgiven. He cautiously approached the building and sniffed again. Mud back home hadn’t smelled like this. Just as he had neared the door, someone stepped through it.

Thirteen-thirteen stumbled back and then looked at the human who had stopped to stare at him. He looked vaguely familiar. At least the face. The rest…not so much. He was holding a small foam cup of a steaming substance. He adjusted his glasses and raised one eyebrow.

“You sure give Canorith the run around, don’t you?”

Thirteen-thirteen’s helmet fins perked up then promptly lowered again.

“Still upset with me?” The man took another sip, “Would you prefer being lied to?”

Thirteen-thirteen gave the man a rather angry scowl and turned away; bumping into a human and causing the contents of his cup to spill. Boiling brown liquid splashed onto his armor. He cried out and retreated beneath a table, rubbing his tender arm. It had been hot just like that thing at the Federation! Why had the human done that? Mud must be a very serious matter for humankind.

He almost jumped when one of the chairs moved. Terrik. That was the other human’s name. He had moved it aside and was offering out his hand. Thirteen-thirteen blinked and gazed at him with crimson eyes.

“Come on.” He encouraged, “You can come with me.”

Thirteen-thirteen shook his head. The human would only bring him back to that big zetraloid and Canorith who hated him now.

“No? Okay then.” Terrik sat down on the chair and sighed, “I told him this was going to be trouble. Does he even know you’re gone?”

Thirteen-thirteen nodded his head and began to draw patterns in the dust with his finger. Maybe he could live under here instead. Then no one would bother him.

Terrik looked at his watch then back to Thirteen-thirteen. He stood up, brushed himself off and went into a different building. A small girl and boy rushed out, laughing with their parents following just behind. They each carried something that they were licking at.

Thirteen-thirteen watched until they had disappeared around the corner. Why couldn’t he have that? Even if it was just some of his family! He’d have given anything to be back with them in their house or to go get that stuff the humans had with his brothers.

“Ice cream?”

He jumped up and hit his head on the table.

“Ouch!” Covering and rubbing his head, he sat back down. Mean table. Did it hate him too? He glanced out to locate the owner of the voice which had startled him. Terrik had returned, holding one of those things the human children had been holding. Its vibrant colors of pink, orange and green were rather appealing.

Thirteen-thirteen eventually crawled out and reached for it. Terrik handed him it without question. He promptly stuck his finger in it. How cold! And squishy! After doing so a few more times, he tried licking it as he had seen the human children do. That was good! He began licking at it more, content with his treat, as he sat on the ground.

He had eaten nearly half of it before noticing Terrik was still there. Was he his new family? Like the people who had walked by? He didn’t seem to be paying much attention to anything other than that foam cup. Oh, and the small bird that had just flown by. Thirteen-thirteen stood up and licked the ice cream again, watching as Terrik rose from his chair and checked his watch again.

“Still don’t want to come?”

Thirteen-thirteen lowered his gaze to the ice cream. He didn’t reply, but started following Terrik. It was better than wandering by himself, and maybe the human even liked him! They stopped at a store on the way. It had hard brown carpet and smelled like cardboard. A lot of packages and envelopes were spread around the room.

Thirteen-thirteen poked at one while Terrik spoke to the person at the counter. From somewhere above, a song began to play. Thirteen-thirteen listened for a bit before beginning to sway in time with the beat as he licked at the ice cream. This was a peaceful place.

“He’s adorable. Is he yours?”

“Thankfully, no.” Terrik answered with a subtle laugh.

Thirteen-thirteen stopped and frowned. Why didn’t he want to be around him? Did humans simply only like their own kind? After awhile Terrik was ready to leave. Thirteen-thirteen followed close behind yet again.

“I don’t suppose you’re ready to go home yet, are you?”

Thirteen-thirteen shrugged. It wasn’t like Terrik wanted him around either, so what did it matter? He remained silent as the man led him back to the very place he had fled from.

“Lose something?” Terrik asked when he saw Canorith outside.

“You found him!” Canorith tossed aside a small tool as he came to meet them.

“He found me, really.”

Thirteen-thirteen reluctantly stepped out into the open. Canorith still didn’t look very happy, although by far less furious than earlier. He pointed to the house. Thirteen-thirteen sighed and slowly made his way there, past the giant zetraloid, Vorth, who was standing near the door.

“Don’t worry. He can’t stay mad forever.” He offered.

Thirteen-thirteen paused to look at him. Maybe he wasn’t so bad. His thoughts were cut short when Canorith entered the house, instantaneously glaring. A frown tugged at Thirteen-thirteen’s face as he scurried into the office and watched silently as Canorith slammed the door shut.

He waited for a few minutes before going over to a corner not buried in papers and sitting down. Was this how it would always be? He began watching the clock. Wouldn’t Canorith come back for him? The hours kept stretching on. Light from the window had turned to moonlight. Had they forgotten about him? He couldn’t hear anyone, nor see light from the other room. He kicked at a crumpled piece of paper for awhile then went over to the window, looking for the stars; all he could see was a gray haze with faint light though.

Alrighty. Very Happy Time for some more Faint Inception. =D What was that other word you used the other night? I found it hilarious but forgot. =( And it wasn't Faint Reception was it?

Poor lil Edgy. =. If only he had more experience under his belt. D= Then he could look fat and have a belt. =) Dirt and problems? =. Come on Canorith's wife that isn't a huge deal okay? Calm down a little. =. It's just dirt and I'm sure your husband can afford a vacuum. =U Maybe even an expensive brand like.....Wal-Mart Plus. =)

"Then you bring HIM." =. Hey at least she said him, and not 'IT' or 'THAT THING'. =) See Edge she likes you. xD Poor Edge. =U He can tell what he did wrong, he just doesn't know why it be wrong. Uh oh. ._. Boy, even though I understand why Canorith is mad perfectly, I still can also perfectly understand Edge and his actions and stuff and it all comes together perfectly and leaves me feeling like I don't know who is right. =O Does Canorith have the right to be angry? Well yes, he does. However, he shouldn't. Edge had good intentions didn't he? Amazing writing skill, no other literature has challenged my mind as such.

AH WATER CANORITH STOP DON'T MAKE HIM FEAR WATER oh it's a bath. =) Silly me. =D And you Edge, YOU MADE ME THINK IT. *passes blame to Edge* =) Now for the house. =. Canorith gathered up the hose and began to bring it inside. =D

Kick the rock and wonder about what you did wrong. =U Kids are so unwise. xD Poor Edge. =P Oh no a threat. 0.0 Could it be...is it...Hornet? =O ROCK ON THE FACE OHHHH BURNED. I mean smacked. Edgy Edge. xD

Why did I say Hornet you told me who it was last night. o.0 The heck....WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?! Oh gosh Edge, not inside while you're wet. D= Blueprints?! EDGE STOP LOOKIG AROUND AND STUFF. Gosh. Vorth. =. Is he the babysitter? =) xD At least he seems nice. Then again I've never met a table with a grudge.

Run there Mr. Fast. >=. Vorth is nice and Canorith is only annoying and weird and stuff and you have no where to go so keep running. =U Real smart...NICE PLANNING. Gosh, stupid humans need to get out of the way or stop acting like he is a murdering machine. =U Wait ten years THEN squeal everyone gosh. Running and running and running. =.

See even in his panic he thinks about helping Canny. =U He does care Canorith, you and your wife need to give him a better chance. TERRIK or Tekik or whatever your name is, stop being so easy to hate and understand at the same time. I DEMAND THIS. =I Gosh poor Edge. D= Hot coffee onto his armor. He does not get along well with this substance.

Well TEKIK ( =) ) I hope you are happy, Edge has you figured out. Terrik is a pretty interesting character, and I like his style of actions and things. =. But dang it why is he so easy to dislike? Live under a table Edge. xD How well thought out.

A small girl and boy rushed out, laughing with their parents following just behind. They each carried something that they were licking at. Thirteen-thirteen watched until they had disappeared around the corner. Why couldn’t he have that? <----- I immediately assumed he wanted some of the ice cream or suckers or whatever they were licking at. xDD Not a family. =( Poor Edge. xD

Okay so it was ice cream. =. Terrik does care. Very Happy Giving Edge some ice cream. xD Good for him he is not disliked by Brad at this second anymore. =) Hard brown carpet. =. So wood, Edge? =) Is he at the Post Office? =. Thankfully no. HA HA HA HA.....HA.... =| Nice Terrik nice.

Okay I admit Canorith kinda cares too he seemed worried. =. Giant zetra. xD Can't stay mad forever? I beg to differ...

Wrath: If he fails I can show you how it's done....too bad you won't live forever to see me be correct.

Poor Edge. =( All alone and left to be rotting away like Corruption for a while. D= I like how you ended it, I really did. xD It wasn't really suspense but it makes it seem like Edge really is waiting...because I must wait. =. So nice job. Very Happy You also once again did a superb job making everything come together into a very enjoyable reading experience. =. Thank you for posting and stuff. Very Happy
